Line Composition Series
The Line Composition Series employs clay strips as its core visual language and comprises 18 individual works. In this series, the artist, for the first time during the clay modeling stage of ceramic creation, uses clay strips as the primary expressive element, developing a sculptural and painterly artistic expression. The inspiration for this series stems from the artist's long-standing dual practice in painting and sculpture: in painting, lines serve as a medium for recording; in sculpture, clay, as a foundational material for shaping forms, provides a tangible sense of solidity in three-dimensional space. Throughout the artist's journey of artistic education and creative exploration, an enduring fascination with the expressive potential of lines has been evident—particularly the freedom and dynamic expressiveness found in the lines of two-dimensional drawings. This affinity for linework continues today, with the artist's notebooks filled with traces and sketches made with lines. This habitual engagement with line drawing has ultimately driven the artist to use ceramic clay strips as a medium for line-based expression, pushing the boundaries of sculptural form. Through this approach, the artist injects a novel visual and spatial language into ceramic art, bridging the realms of two-dimensional linework and three-dimensional sculptural form.
The artist delves deeply into the characteristics of ceramic materials, employing innovative techniques to stack clay strips into forms with a strong sense of three-dimensionality. This approach not only preserves the intrinsic uniqueness of ceramics but also expands the expressive potential of linework traditionally found in painting. While conventional painting emphasizes the illusion of space on a flat surface, the artist reimagines linework through ceramic clay strips, constructing shapes directly within three-dimensional space. This exploration has led to the creation of a new artistic expression termed "Linear Clay Coil Sculpture," which transforms the essence of line drawing into tangible three-dimensional forms. In a series of works beginning with the title Human Echoes, the artist further emphasizes the qualities of "sculptural painting," showcasing the interplay of lines within three-dimensional space. These works feature white textures of erosion and peeling juxtaposed with black contrasts, reflecting the complexities of the modern human condition. Simultaneously, they capture the rhythms of time and the artist's internal sense of cadence. One standout piece, F7, serves as a self-portrait and represents a concrete manifestation of this exploration. In this work, clay strips are arranged and interwoven before imprinting onto a plaster mold of the artist's likeness, creating a visually distinctive effect. The title F7 humorously references the artist’s name, playing on its phonetic resemblance, and symbolizes the artist's reflective process and authentic emotional expression when considering time as the exhibition's central theme.
This series of works not only interprets the language of lines, transforming them into visual flows and emotional projections but also reveals their symbolic significance as representations of the passage of time and the rhythms of life. Through ceramic art, the artist seeks to explore a form of artistic expression that is both simple and profound. Each piece uniquely demonstrates the multifaceted meanings of lines, imbuing them with a richness of visual and emotional depth.
