78209 Mining Zone Series

The 78209 Mining Zone Series comprises 16 works that represent the artist's reflections on natural transformations and the passage of time. These works draw inspiration from the artist's keen observations of the natural environment and inner emotional responses, utilizing ceramics as the primary medium. The series incorporates geometric forms and stone-like shapes, enriched with textures mimicking the surface patterns of natural rocks, creating a compelling visual and tactile experience. The conceptual foundation of this series dates back to early 2023, during the artist's participation in a ten-day rural art education workshop held in Jinfeng Village, Taitung County. The artist's profound inspiration was sparked by the experience of watching the sunrise along the magnificent coast of Jinfeng. Observing the transition from darkness to the first glimmers of light, culminating in the majestic rise of the sun, evoked a deep emotional resonance. This moment of awe gave rise to imaginative reflections centered on critical themes such as soil, time, landscape, and the material traces left by natural processes. These reflections ultimately formed the core conceptual framework of this series.

The work Geography Class incorporates augmented reality (AR) technology, allowing viewers to use a smartphone or tablet to scan the contours of the piece. A one-minute animation appears above the artwork when viewed through the camera. The animation begins with the Big Bang and the formation of Earth, transitions to the discovery of fire and the advent of ceramics, and further explores the evolution of civilization, the Industrial Revolution, the development of ceramic arts, and future technological innovations such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence. This narrative-driven animation reflects the artist's contemplation of the historical and future trajectories of clay and metaphorically aligns with the concept that "Earth is God’s pottery." It suggests that through the Big Bang and the forging forces of fire, Earth has gradually accumulated the conditions necessary for fostering life and the beauty of natural landscapes over time. In addition to integrating AR technology to present the animation, this work also incorporates a school desk and chair as integral elements of its overall composition. Inspired by the miniature contours of natural rock formations, the ceramic form is adorned with the classic blue and purple hues of Song Dynasty Jun ware glaze. Through the interplay of the school desk, chair, and ceramic design, the work symbolizes the transformation of contemporary education. It emphasizes that, beyond traditional classroom teaching, digital technology is increasingly becoming a vital tool for enhancing learning experiences. This juxtaposition of elements highlights the convergence of tradition and modernity, offering a nuanced reflection on the multidimensional nature of education and its ongoing evolution.

“78209” refers to the classroom number of the studio space and also serves as the creative site for the artist. Within this space, the artist completes every stage of the creative process, from conceptualization and sketching to material preparation, shaping, glazing, and designing the final display format. This journey parallels the act of creation in nature, akin to a divine force shaping the Earth. Through this process, the artist embodies a deep exploration of both nature and art.

Dedicating time outside of teaching, the artist immerses fully in the creative process, experiencing a state of flow where the perception of time fades away. This state not only fuels creativity but also reflects the artist's belief that the act of creation is the most authentic expression of an artist's inner thoughts. Through the forms and colors unique to ceramic materials, the artist seeks to convey how the traces of natural creation, shaped by time, evolve into tangible, visible forms in the final works.
